24 hours in Casale Monferrato — Part 2

24 hours in Casale Monferrato — Part 2

In the first part of this guide, we walked through a Casale day from breakfast to lunch. Now, the afternoon through to evening.

The Paleologi Castle

Once home to the Marquises of Monferrato, the Castle today hosts temporary exhibitions, the Civic Museum and — the surprise — a wine bar where you can taste local wines. History and a glass of wine meeting in the most unexpected place. Just steps away, the woodland along the Po closes the afternoon in green silence.

The Municipal Theatre

On Piazza Castello, the Municipal Theatre is one of the most beautiful buildings in Casale, a spectacle before you even walk in. Inaugurated in 1791, returned to the city in 1990 with Vittorio Gassman starring in its reopening. Four tiers of boxes, stuccoes, gilding, velvet.

The Civic Tower

Sixty metres of brick rising above Casale. During Casale Città Aperta days, the second Sunday of each month, visitors climb all 176 steps to the top. The city from above is an entirely different place.

The Po River

Few people know it, but Casale is also a river city. The riverside woodland along the Po is a green lung where families walk, children play, cyclists pedal among the poplars. The quiet side that contrasts with the baroque palaces of the centre.

The evening stroll

In the evening, Via Roma and Via Saffi become the pulsing heart of Casale. Locals walk them slowly, stop, run into each other. It's the city's ritual, the one that endures night after night. The natural conclusion is gelato at Gelateria Slurp, where every good Casale evening ends.

Bonus, September: the Wine Festival

Every year, Mercato Pavia becomes the capital of Monferrato's DOC wines: tastings, producers, music, food and wine culture. Casale is recognised as a capital of DOC wine, and the Wine Festival is the moment that proves it. Worth marking on the calendar.
